“No quarantine for pets entering the UK“ Sounds fantastic! Yet there are a myriad of details to attend to before Fido, the kitty, or the ferret, are ready to leave the US for their flight to the United Kingdom.
Effective 01 January 2012, the rules for pets (dogs, cats, and ferrets) entering the UK have changed. There are five easy steps
- Microchip the pet for identification purposes
- Rabies vaccinate the pet with an approved vaccine after micro chipping, recording the microchip number on the Rabies vaccination certificate
- Wait 21 + days (e.g. 23-25
- See your accredited veterinarian for the issuing of the international health certificate within 10 days of flight departure
- Have the dog treated for tapeworms within 24-120 hours prior to flight departure.

DEFRA’s Pet Travel Scheme allows for dogs, cats, and ferrets to enter the UK quarantine-free as long as one follows the protocol covering a period of typically less than 30 days.
